The Salvesen Graham Guide to Living Rooms

The most hard-working room of the house, a well-designed living room can make family time or entertaining a joy. Here are our considerations for living room designs.

Refresh Your Retreat

Calming Colour

While colour is an inherently personal decision, it can be one of the hardest ones to make when it comes to the living room as a space that gets used and loved as much as it does.

Our accessories are ideal for injecting little bursts of colour. While Moss, our much-loved shade of sage that can be found in our
Great Check RugsZig Zag Curtains and Cushions, offers a soothing element to any room.

Forest, an altogether deeper, more emerald green (used in our TablesMirrorsLamps and Trays) provides rich depth to a space. If your room is on the smaller side, strategically placed mirrors are a great way to help create the illusion of more space.

Try Some Texture

It’s not just colour that can have a real impact on the feel of a space. Bringing together a variety of textures is also a key consideration when it comes to adding warmth to a room. While large pieces of furniture like sofas can of course, make the room feel instantly inviting, playing with contrasting fabrics, accessories and flooring options can also be effective.

Play With Print

A delicate pattern can be a wonderful way of adding some interest and dynamism. We work a lot with print in our collections and whether it’s something larger and more dominating like a sofa, or something subtler like a cushion or lampshade, we love how a whimsical floral print can instantly add freshness to a scheme.
Don’t underestimate how much can be done with your walls, besides painting. Panelling and
borders are both wonderful ways to break up the space as well as highlight features such as vaulted ceilings or doorpanels.

Successful Storage

If your living room doubles up as a family room or playroom then it must work even harder, combining comfort with function. Considering what each family member requires from the space is an important first step and one which will help ensure all bases are covered from the start. If storage is a necessity, make sure you invest in clever solutions like cubes that bring a uniformity to shelves if displayed.

Feature Flooring

Flooring is another great way to add interest and colour to your room.

A well-positioned rug will zone your seating area as well as adding a tactile surface for those members of the family more comfortable on the floor be it for little paws or children playing board games.

If the colours of conventional wood stains don’t inspire you but practicality denotes you using floorboards, consider adding pattern through painting them like we have here. A hardwearing finish makes this a great choice for families.

Layered Lighting

If the room is a sanctuary for the family to sit and read as much as it is to relax and watch TV, then clever lighting is key. We’re huge fans of thoughtfully placed lamps, which will provide enough illumination to read with. For extra ambience why not light candles for an atmospheric glow.
