How to mix antique and modern pieces for an elegantly balanced room

Salvesen Graham is known for reinventing traditional spaces in a fresh way. We do this by taking antiques and reworking them in contemporary colours and patterns. Antiques feature in many of our interiors because their sense of provenance helps ground a room.

We like to use antiques in unexpected way, such as framed antique textiles or ceramics repurposed as planters and vases. We often put plates on walls, especially in bathrooms or living rooms, as they offer a wonderful yet inexpensive way to create impact.

Items from a variety of ages combined with new pieces can work well together.

For this project, a drawing room in a Georgian house in London, the brief was to create a space that felt right for now, while keeping an air of having evolved over time. These antique pieces work well alongside the fresh colours and patterns chosen for the soft furnishings. The colour and pattern balance the dark antique pieces and white-painted walls, and introduce a sense of modern personality.
