Behind The Design: Suzanni

Behind the beautifully embroidered pieces that we love to include in our schemes,

Enchanting Embroidery

Suzanis originate from Central Asia and more specifically Uzbekistan, the elaborate hand embroidered textiles have been traditionally made by women for centuries. The word "suzani" comes from the Persian word for "needle", a fitting name for the thousands of stitches that are used to create the distinctive designs. They were often made by brides and their mothers and included in their dowry which is why the designs include traditional symbols of luck, health and fertility.

Suzanis are typically  made using a cotton or silk base on top of which vegetable dyes are used, either directly or with embroidery. The joyful use of blues and pinks are a Suzani signature.  The large scale of Suzanis mean that they lend themselves to plenty of uses, both traditionally and in contemporary interiors.

Suzanis can be used in several ways within a home and are a fabulous way to add both colour and pattern into a room. Traditionally used as wall coverings, we find they are a worthy substitute for art and can be can cost effective way to cover large areas. Because of their cotton or silk nature we also enjoy using them as bed covers or even upholstered pieces like ottomans.
